This is a shamanic wedding I performed in Stockholm, Sweden. The bride and groom wanted to honour the elements, so while their wedding appeared tradition in appearance, they had the four elements of Earth, Air, Water, Fire, represented by four beautiful bridesmaids, who were all dressed accordingly. The bridesmaids stood in their direction (North, South, East etc), holding sacred space for the wedding ceremony, which took place under a flower arch in the gardens of a mansion house. The bride and groom said their own vows to each other, the bride’s mother gave a reading and there were two singers and a guitarist who provided beautiful traditional songs personal to the couple and to the ceremony. During the ceremony, which was created especially for the couple, and while the singers sang, each bridesmaid moved from their direction and gave a blessing to the couple, which was very special and moving. As the groom was Irish, a traditional bagpiper led the couple and the congregation to the beautiful reception area where much jollity was had by all. It was a truly magical event, and I was delighted that the feedback from the congregation was very positive – in fact many couples decided they wanted to renew their vows in a shamanic ceremony!
